Columbus Catholic soccer opens season with second-place finish at CWC Invitational

WAUPUN – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team opened its 2019 season finished second at the Central Wisconsin Christian Invitational on Friday and Saturday, losing a shootout in the championship game.

On Friday, Columbus Catholic topped Neenah St. Mary’s Central in a shootout 4-3 after the game finished in a 1-1 tie.

On Saturday in the semifinals, the Dons beat Kenosha Christian Life 4-1 before losing in a shootout 3-2 to Lake Mills in the championship match 3-2 after it was 2-2 in regulation.

The Dons only goal in the tie with St. Mary’s was an own goal by the Zephyrs. Wyatt Drexler had five saves in goal for Columbus.

Dylan Porter scored just 47 seconds into the game against Kenosha Christian Life, and Zach Olson added another goal just 8½ minutes later as the Dons took control early.

Porter and Kellen Delaney each added goals in the win.

Olson and Tom Nystrom had goals in the championship match for Columbus.

The Dons will open Central Wisconsin Conference action Tuesday at home against Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia/Rosholt. The game will be played at Griese Park and begin at 5 p.m.
