MARSHFIELD – For the third time in four tries on the pitch this season, the Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team broke even.

Kellen Delaney scored off an assist from Dylan Porter with 3:17 remaining in the game to even things up and help the Dons to a 2-2 tie with Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia/Rosholt in the Central Wisconsin Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday at Griese Park.

The first three goals of the game were results of fouls.

Tom Nystrom scored on a penalty kick 12:03 into the contest for the Dons after Delaney was tripped in the penalty box.

Amherst/Iola-Scandinavia/Rosholt took advantage of a Dons’ foul before halftime. The free kick from 25 yards out was deflected by Columbus Catholic goalkeeper Wyatt Drexler, but then punched in by Ethan Johnson to knot the score at 1-1 in the 39th minute.

That score held until 13:49 into the second half when the Falcons’ Flynn Peterson nailed a penalty kick after another Columbus foul, giving them a 2-1 lead until Delaney was able to tie it just before the end of the game.

Drexler and AIR goalkeeper Mason Czech each finished with nine saves in goal.

Columbus Catholic (1-0-3) will play at Northland Lutheran in another CWC game on Thursday.
