MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team pulled off a big early-season victory on Tuesday night as it opened its Wisconsin Valley Conference season with a 2-1 win over defending conference champion Stevens Point at Heiting Community Stadium.

All of the goals were scored in the first half and the Marshfield defense did the rest.

Kyle Tremelling scored off an assist from Ian Haugen just 7:17 into the game to give the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead.

Stevens Point didn’t take long to even things when Carlos Perez tied the game with a goal just 1:11 later.

Marshfield grabbed the lead back at the 25:05 mark when Sam Roherty scored off an assist from Bennett Koehn, and as fast as the game started, it quickly slowed down as both defenses dug in.

Marshfield shut the door the rest of the way as goalkeeper Trevor Cassidy finished with four saves.

Marshfield (2-1-1, 1-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference) plays at Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday at 7 p.m. Stevens Point plays a nonconference game at Bay Port on Thursday, also at 7 p.m.
