MARATHON – The Auburndale boys and girls swept the team titles as their early-season success continued at the Marathon Cross Country Invitational on Thursday.
The Auburndale boys had four top finishers in the top 16 and finished with 61 points. Athens was second with 71 and Marathon third with 73 at the nine-team meet.
Johnathon Nowacki of Athens won the 5-kilometer boys race in 16:52.1, 51 seconds ahead of Auburndale’s Carl Lundgren (17:43.5).
Charles Jewell was eighth (18:35.3), Gavin White Eagle took 12th (19:03.6), Ian Lang finished 16th (19:17.3) and Parker Empey was 23rd (19:43.3) to round out the scoring runners for the Apaches.
The Auburndale girls had all five of its top runners finish in the top 11 as it ended up with 35 points. Marathon was second with 66 and Prentice was third with 94.
Elizabeth Schmidt of Merrill won the girls race in 20:11.8, one minute in front of Three Lakes/Phelps’ Kallie Volk.
McKenna Zieher took fifth (21:43.9), Macie Schmeiser finished seventh (22:04.6), Jordyn Karl was ninth (22:11.9), Erricka Zenner was 10th (22:22.8) and Vanessa Mitchell finished 11th (22:37.6) to account for the Apaches’ scoring.
Auburndale will return to action Tuesday at the Marshfield Invitational at Frey Field in Spencer.
