Hortonville rips off 20 unanswered points to top Marshfield football

HORTONVILLE – Marshfield took the lead early in the third quarter only to see Hortonville run off 20-straight points and post a 29-14 victory in a Valley Football Association crossover game Friday night at Akin Field.

Will Nikolai had a 25-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 14-9 lead with 9:33 left in the third quarter before Hortonville (3-0 overall and Valley Football Association South Division) put the clamps on Marshfield.

The Polar Bears forced a pair of turnovers and had a blocked punt returned for a touchdown to pull ahead and secure the victory.

T.J Payne caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Allen and Chase Hughes returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in a span of less than 2 minutes, putting the Polar Bears up 22-14.

Payne added his third touchdown of the game, from 30 yards out, to finish the scoring for Hortonville.

Marshfield (1-2 overall and Valley Football Association South Division) took an early 7-0 lead with a dominating drive to start the game. The Tigers drove 68 yards on 16 plays and chewed up more than 9 minutes on the clock before quarterback Joey Goettl connected with Simon Slade for a 6-yard touchdown pass.

Hortonville secured a safety, tackling Goettl in the end zone, and added a 2-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Payne just before the half to take a 9-7 lead into the break.

Allen finished with 261 yards passing, 111 to Parker Lawrence, who hauled in seven passes. Payne had just four catches, but three were for touchdowns.

Sam Hinson topped Marshfield in rushing with 63 yards, 35 coming on one play in the first half. Wyatt LeMoine caught eight passes for 77 yards to lead the Tigers’ receivers.

Marshfield returns home to Heiting Community Stadium next Friday, Sept. 13, when its hosts Kaukauna
