Marshfield boys soccer holds off Merrill

MERRILL – The Marshfield boys soccer team scored twice in the first five minutes and held off Merrill 3-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference match Tuesday night at Merrill High School.

With the win, Marshfield is now 3-3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Merrill falls to 0-3 in conference play.

Marshfield dominated the game, but had to hold on in the second half to post the win.

The Tigers outshot Merrill 24-6 and had eight corner kicks. Merrill goalkeeper Wyatt Grosskurth had 11 saves in goal, keeping the Bluejays close.

Spencer Frey scored off an assist from Kyle Tremelling just 3:22 into the game, and Tremelling added a goal on a penalty kick at the 5:02 mark to push the Tigers off to a quick 2-0 start.

Jordan Brzoznowski had a goal at the 6:41 mark to cut the Tigers’ lead in half.

Tremelling scored again, off an assist from Evan Weister, in the 18th minute to put Marshfield up 3-1.

Brzoznowski scored again in the 39th minute to make it 3-2 and the Tigers’ defense did the rest.

Marshfield was able to keep the score at 3-2 the final 51 minutes to earn the win.

Trevor Cassidy had four saves in goal for the Tigers.

Marshfield plays at D.C. Everest on Thursday.
