STRATFORD – A feisty nonconference volleyball match ended in a five-set thriller as Stratford outlasted visiting Marshfield 3-2 in front of a big crowd at Stratford High School on Thursday night.

Stratford controlled the first two games, 25-16, 25-18, before Marshfield fought back with a pair of tight victories, 25-23, 31-29.

In the fifth in deciding game, the play remained even with Stratford able to outlast its opponent 15-12 and defeat Marshfield for the second-straight season.

Mikayla Guldan had 25 kills and nine digs, Lauryn Nagel added 16 kills and 27 assists, and Abby Oertel had 21 assists to lead Stratford.

Lindsey Steffen had 19 kills, Taylor Barwick had 20 assists, and Kati Sadowska had 19 digs to lead Marshfield in those three categories. Brooklyn Boushack added nine kills, Bailey Matis had 14 assists and 12 digs, and Kaydee Johnson had 12 digs for Marshfield.

“I am so impressed with how this team fought back after being down two sets in somebody else’s gym,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “These girls know how to fight together. I don’t really count this as a loss since so many good things happened on the court tonight.”

Stratford will compete at the Auburndale Invitational on Saturday, while Marshfield is off until next Thursday, Sept. 19, when it hosts Wausau East.
