Marshfield boys soccer shuts out Wausau West, pulls into tie for first in WVC

WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys soccer team picked up a big Wisconsin Valley Conference win on Thursday, taking down previously unbeaten Wausau West 2-0 at West High School.

Wausau West (7-1, 4-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference) outshot Marshfield (6-3-1, 4-1 WVC) 23-14 overall and 14-7 on goal, but Tigers’ goalkeeper Trevor Cassidy was on fire, turning back all 14 shots.

Following a scoreless first half, Kyle Tremelling scored at the 56:11 mark and Alejandro Mayagoitia added a goal with 10:27 remaining for Marshfield’s two scores, pushing the Tigers into a tie with West for first place in the conference.

Marshfield will play the remainder of its game that was postponed on Sept. 12 at D.C. Everest on Monday. The Tigers trail 1-0 with approximately 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The Tigers will then play a nonconference game at Rhinelander on Tuesday before returning to WVC action Sept. 26 at Stevens Point.

Wausau West hosts Stevens Point on Tuesday and plays at Wisconsin Rapids next Thursday.
