MARATHON – The Auburndale football team took a big step toward a WIAA playoff berth as it rolled past Marathon 36-6 in a Marawood Conference game Friday night at Marathon High School.
Auburndale is now 4-1 overall, and more importantly 2-1 in the Marawood Conference. The Apaches will need to win one of their final two conference games in order to become playoff eligible. Auburndale hosts undefeated Stratford next Friday, Sept. 27, and Rib Lake/Prentice in the final week of the season on Oct. 18.
Auburndale pulled out to a 21-0 lead by halftime as Cooper Weinfurter had his hands in all three scores.
The senior defensive back/quarterback returned an interception 23 yards for a score, threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Wright, and had a 1-yard TD run to give the Apaches a commanding lead.
Auburndale put the game away with a pair of second half scores. Dylan Paun had a 3-yard touchdown run and Schuyler Gilhausen ran in from 23 yards to finish off the Apaches’ scoring.
Weinfurter threw for 153 yards as Auburndale outgained Marathon 213-159. The Apaches also forced five turnovers.
