Wausau East wins team title, Marshfield fifth at Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Tennis Tournament

WAUSAU – Wausau East won three titles and earned three runner-up finishes to win its second overall championship in the past three years as it finished first at the Wisconsin Valley Conference Girls Tennis Tournament on Thursday at Wausau East High School.

East, winners of the conference dual meet season, had six of its seven competitors reach the finals, with three coming out victorious. Wausau West and Stevens Point each had two tournament champions to finish second and third, respectively, in the final WVC standings.

Marshfield was fifth with a second, a third and two fourth-place finishers at the tournament.

Marshfield’s No. 2 doubles team of Krupa Patel and Sydney Newmier reached the finals before losing to Stevens Point’s Allison Rust and Leah Olsen, 6-0, 6-1.

The Tigers’ No. 3 doubles team of Ana Paape and Christina Chin came in as the No. 1 seed but was upset in the semifinals. The duo regrouped to beat Caroline Blakeman and Sabrina O’Keefe of Stevens Point 6-2, 6-2, in the third-place match.

Marshfield’s No. 1 doubles team of Emily Weis and Lauren Weigel, and Jabina Devadas at No. 1 singles both lost third-place matches to finish fourth. Hailey McCanna finished fifth at No. 4 singles as well for the Tigers.

Singles champions were Natasha Bailey (No. 1) and Lilia Teske (No. 2) of Wausau West, and Claire Peterson (No. 3) and Lola Berumen (No. 4) of Wausau East.

Meghan DeBot and Anna Hlavac of Stevens Point won the No. 1 doubles title, with Brittany Khammanivong and Katie Martell of Wausau East taking first at No. 3 doubles.

Marshfield will compete at the WIAA Division 1 subsectional on Monday at Stevens Point Area Senior High.
