MARSHFIELD – Merrill may have come into Thursday’s match winless in the Wisconsin Valley Conference, but the Bluejays gave the Marshfield boys soccer team all it could handle.

Evan Weister scored with 6:05 remaining to give the Tigers a hard-fought 2-1 win over Merrill at Heiting Community Stadium.

Weister scored with 9:45 remaining in the first half and the Tigers’ 1-0 lead held into the second half.

Merrill tied it in the 59th minute when Caleb Novitch got one past Marshfield goalkeeper Trevor Cassidy, who finished with two saves.

Despite dominating the ball for much of the game, Marshfield wasn’t able to get another goal until late when Weister made the game-winner.

Marshfield remains in contention for the Wisconsin Valley Conference title, improving to 6-2-1 in conference play and 8-4-2 overall. Merrill is now 2-7 and 0-7 in the WVC.

Marshfield is back in action Saturday with a nonconference game at Hortonville beginning at 11 a.m.
