WAUSAU – Marshfield’s offense overcame a slow start and its defense was dominant again, leading to is third-straight victory in Valley Football Association West Division play.

Wausau West scored on its opening possession, but that would be it as the Tigers’ defense blanked West the rest of the way, scored a safety early in the third quarter, and Marshfield would get its offense going on its way to a 25-7 win on Friday night at Thom Field.

With the victory, the Tigers improve to 4-3 overall and in the Valley Football Association West Division, and becomes playoff eligible. West falls to 1-6 and 0-6 in conference play. Click here to view the VFA West standings.

During its three-game winning streak, Marshfield has allowed just 17 points.

West went 67 yards in eight plays on its opening possession, which ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by quarterback Garrett Richardt.

That score would hold until the second quarter when Marshfield took over.

West fumbled deep in its own territory the first time it had the ball. The Warriors recovered it in the end zone and Marshfield was able to down the player for a safety, making it 7-2.

The Tigers took the free kick and went 57 yards in 13 plays, with Sam Hinson plunging in from the 1-yard line to give them a 9-7 lead.

Junior running back Will Nikolai ran in from the 28 in the final minute of the quarter to extend the lead to 15-7.

The Tigers put the finishing touches on the win with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Joey Goettl to Simon Slade midway through the fourth quarter, and Kyle Tremelling added a 32-yard field goal with 1:36 to go to finish the scoring.

Goettl finished with 101 yards rushing as the Tigers piled up 216 yards on the ground in all. He also threw for 106 yards. Wyatt LeMoine hauled in eight passes for 47 yards to lead the way in the passing game.

Marshfield will host D.C. Everest next Friday, Oct. 11, at Heiting Community Stadium. With a victory, Marshfield would win its second-straight VFA West title and secure a WIAA playoff spot. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and on wdlbwosq.com.
