WAUSAU – Spencer Frey scored in the second minute of the game and Marshfield ripped off five-straight goals before having to hold on at the end for a 5-3 win over Wausau East on Thursday at East High School.

Marshfield is now 10-5-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference with one match remaining, at first-place Wausau West on Tuesday. The Tigers will have to win that game, and have West lose to Stevens Point in its conference finale on Oct. 17, to win the conference title.

Frey scored, off an assist from Kyle Tremelling, 1:55 into the game to give the Tigers a quick lead.

Sam Roherty added a pair of goals before halftime, putting Marshfield up 3-0.

That lead held for 43 minutes before Evan Weister and Tremelling each scored in the 71st minute to make it 5-0.

East suddenly found its offensive rhythm to put a scare into the Tigers.

Lisandro Ortiz, Andrew Heinsen and Alex Zavadoski scored in a 6½ minute span for the Lumberjacks as they closed the gap to 3-0 with nearly 10 minutes left in the game.

Marshfield was able to regroup and keep East scoreless the rest of the way.

Trevor Cassidy had five saves in goal for Marshfield.
