MARSHFIELD – Thursday’s Central Wisconsin Conference soccer game between Marshfield Columbus Catholic and Stevens Point Pacelli came down to one kick, and the Dons’ Kellen Delaney came through.
Delaney drilled home a penalty kick with 21:30 left in the game for what proved to be the game-winner as Columbus Catholic won 1-0 at Griese Park.
The victory extends Columbus Catholic’s conference win streak to 10 in a row as it is now 10-0-1 in the CWC. The Dons need to win just one more match to clinch the conference title, which would be their third straight.
Columbus (12-1-3 overall) dominated play, outshooting the Cardinals (7-10, 6-6 CWC) 42-9 overall and 22-4 on goal, but couldn’t get a shot to go in until the penalty kick late in the game.
Wyatt Drexler had four saves in goal for the Dons.
Columbus finishes its regular-season and Central Wisconsin Conference schedule next week with three road games – Monday at Wausau Newman Catholic, Tuesday at Gresham/Bowler, and Thursday at Tri-County.
