Columbus Catholic soccer tops Newman Catholic, clinches Central Wisconsin Conference title

WAUSAU – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic soccer team clinched its third-straight Central Wisconsin Conference championship with a 5-1 win over Wausau Newman Catholic on Monday.

Leading 2-1 at halftime, the Dons put the game away with three goals in a 10½ minute stretch in the second half.

Columbus Catholic has won four-straight conference championships as before it joined the CWC, the Dons won the now-defunct Mid-State Soccer Conference title in 2016.

Kellen Delaney scored five minutes into the game and Sammy Neville added a goal in the 23rd minute to give the Dons a 2-0 lead.

After Newman cut Columbus’ lead in half with a goal by Quinn Reeves in the 39th minute, the Dons scored three times in the first 15 minutes of the second half to take complete control.

Dylan Porter, Delaney and Tom Nystrom had goals in the second half for the Dons, who are now 13-1-3 overall and 11-0-1 in the Central Wisconsin Conference.

Columbus will wrap up its conference schedule with games at Gresham/Bowler on Tuesday and Tri-County on Thursday.
