MARSHFIELD – After a slow first half that saw the score tied at 1-1, the Marshfield boys soccer team’s offense exploded in the second half.
Behind senior Kyle Tremelling’s four second-half goals, the Tigers crushed Green Bay Southwest 7-2 in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal on Tuesday night at Heiting Community Stadium.
Marshfield (12-6-2) moves on to a Division 2 regional final on Saturday at No. 1 seed Hortonville (9-7-3). Game time is 1 p.m. Hortonville beat the Tigers 4-1 in a nonconference game back on Oct. 5.
Tremelling scored at the 14:12 mark and Southwest’s Owen Steiber put home a free kick 12 minutes later, tying the game at 1-1. That score held until halftime before the Tigers began their assault.
Tremelling scored 5:50 into the second half, but again the Trojans countered. Khalid Sufi scored 1:50 later, tying the game at 2-2.
That would be all Southwest would get as Tremelling and the Tigers’ defense took over.
Tremelling had goals in the 65th, 72nd and 74th minutes to push Marshfield out to a 5-2 lead and finish the game with five goals, a career high.
Sam Roherty added a penalty kick and Ian Haugen had a goal on an assist from Roherty to finish off the scoring.
Trevor Cassidy had nine saves in goal for Marshfield.
