WISCONSIN RAPIDS – The Auburndale girls cross country team earned its third-straight top-five finish by taking third in the Division 3 team standings at the 2019 WIAA State Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Ridges Golf Course.
Erricka Zenner finished 35th in 20:54.2, Jordyn Karl took 44th in 21:02.0, and Macie Schmeiser was right behind in 45th in 21:02.3 to lead the Apaches.
Auburndale, making its fifth-straight state meet appearance as a team, finished with 128 points, two behind second-place Gillett. Oshkosh Lourdes Academy won the D-3 girls team title with 112 points. The Apaches took second last year and fourth in 2017 at the state meet.
McKenna Zieher took 57th in 21:10.1 and Lily Kloos finished 76th in 21:41.3 to round out the scoring runners for Auburndale.
Abby Bartel of Weyauwega-Fremont won the girls race in 18:52.9. Two-time defending D-3 individual champion Marissa Ellenbecker finished 10th in 19:47.6 and teammate Morgan Schnelle, a freshman, was 17th in 20:18.7.
Loyal/Greenwood’s Savannah Schley finished 12th in 19:55.3.
Marathon finished 10th in the team standings. Jada Prihoda was 36th in 20:54.5 and Katrina Fredrickson took 41st in 21:00.9 for the Raiders.
Marshfield had two girls and two boys running in the Division 1 races.
Seniors Joseph McKee placed 17th in 16:15.9 and Joshua McKee was 21st in 16:18.8 for the Tigers. Joseph placed 38th and Joshua 91st at last year’s state meet.
Middleton won the Division 1 boys team title with 104 points, with Stevens Point second with 116. Hortonville, led by individual champion Jake Krause (15:34.2), was third.
Jake Bourget led Stevens Point, taking 14th in 16:14.5, and Jake Lepak was 20th in 16:17.9 for the Panthers.
Wausau West’s Ryan Hartman took eighth in 15:56.9 to lead all area runners. D.C. Everest’s Zach Brandenburg was 70th in 16:57.9.
Marshfield sophomore Eliana Kanitz, making her second-straight state meet appearance, bettered her time and place from last year. Kanitz finished 33rd in 19:28.2, six places and 11 seconds better than in 2018.
Freshman Michaela Dick placed 136th in 20:48.7 in her first state trip for the Tigers.
Muskego repeated as the D-1 girls team champion with 72 points. Onalaska was second with 111 and Sun Prairie third with 134.
Stevens Point placed 12th in the team standings with sophomore Roisin Willis placing third overall in 18:20.9. Kora Malecek of Onalaska won the girls race in 17:44.6. Defending champion Genevieve Nashold of Madison West placed eighth in 18:39.3.
Wausau East’s McKenna Taylor was 29th in 19:21.8 and Willow Sering of Wisconsin Rapids took 87th in 20:07.4.
Stratford’s James Heeg and Auburndale’s Carl Lundgren had good runs in the Division 3 boys race. Heeg, who took 60th at last year’s state meet, finished 21st in 17:10.2, and Lundgren was 23rd in 17:12.4.
Christian Patzka of Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld won the D-3 boys race in 16:08.7, six seconds ahead of Birchwood’s Matthew Marcinske.
Stevens Point Pacelli’s Gabe Hoerter finished fourth in 16:26.1 as the Cardinals took fifth in the team standings. La Crosse Aquinas repeated as the Division 3 boys team champion.
Marathon placed 14th in the team standings. Will Prihoda led the Raiders, taking 58th in 17:47.4.
Wisconsin Rapids Assumption’s Garrett Dolan finished 20th in the D-3 boys race in 17:08.8.
Shorewood won the Division 2 team title and Kayci Martensen of Southwestern/Benton/Cuba City won the individual championship in 18:19.9.
Medford, last year’s D-2 girls champion, was fourth with 152 points. Franny Seidel led the Raiders, taking 17th in 19:39.8.
Valders won the boys Division 2 team title for the third year in a row. Green Bay Notre Dame was second and Freedom third.
Shorewood’s Lucas Florsheim won the D-2 boys race in 15:58.8. Medford’s Joseph Sullivan placed 31st in 17:03.5.
