Nagel, UWSP volleyball qualifies for NCAA Tourney

Mazie Nagel, a 2019 Stratford High School graduate, is a freshman on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point women’s volleyball team.

UWSP won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament title with a 3-2 win at UW-Whitewater on Nov. 9 to qualify for the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament. The Pointers (26-8), ranked third in the Midwest region rankings, will play Augsburg (Minn.), ranked fifth in the Central region, in a first-round matchup Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minn.

Nagel has played in all 34 matches this season for the Pointers and has 53 kills, 22 assists, 33 service aces, and ranks fourth on the team with 332 digs.

Tournament plays continues through Saturday at St. Thomas. The Elite Eight, Final Four and championship matches will be played in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Nov. 21-23.

Bolder, Hawkins playing for UWSP football

Auburndale High School graduates Kaleb Bolder and Collin Hawkins are members of the UW-Stevens Point football team.

Bolder has started all nine games this season on the offensive line, and Hawkins, a junior linebacker, has played in eight games with two starts for the Pointers.

Hawkins has made 20 tackles, including a season-high six against UW-Oshkosh in a 20-7 loss on Oct. 12.

The Pointers (3-6) finish their season at home against UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Oemig running for Pointers cross country

Jared Oemig, a 2018 graduate of Marshfield High School, is a sophomore on the UW-Stevens Point men’s cross country team.

Oemig finished 15th in the men’s race at the UW-Oshkosh Open on Oct. 25 in 28:38.3 as the Pointers finished second in the team standings behind UW-Whitewater.

Oemig also ran at the Oshkosh Kollegetown Invitational on Oct. 19 at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, and finished 146th among 452 runners in 28:06.5.

UWSP will compete at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Nov. 16 at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne.
