MANITOWOC – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Marshfield men’s basketball team began its 2019-20 season with a thrilling 89-88 victory over UW-Green Bay at Manitowoc on Saturday.
The Marauders fell behind 29-13 before battling back to tie the game in the first half.
Manitowoc led 47-43 at halftime before Marshfield pulled ahead in the second half, taking an 11-point lead with 3:35 to play.
The Blue Devils made some stops and forced some turnovers to get to within two before Marshfield was able to close out the win. Marshfield Columbus Catholic graduate Joey Miller made a layup and Matthew Roth of Colby hit a free throw for the Marauders before Manitowoc hit a 3-point at the buzzer to cut the final score to one point.
Jack Bezlyk, a Spencer graduate and Wisconsin Collegiate Conference West Division Player of the Year last season, led the Marauders with 20 points, 23 rebounds, four assists and four steals. Miller finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, Roth had 14 points and four assists, and former Marshfield High School player Ethan Posteluk added 11 points and four assists for the Marauders.
Marshfield lost its second game of the season, falling at UW-Stevens Point at Wausau 87-78 on Wednesday night. This story will be updated when statistics are made available.
Marshfield hosts UW-Platteville at Richland at 2:45 p.m. Saturday in its home opener.
