Nagel, Baierl compete at NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The collegiate volleyball seasons came to an end this week for two former area players that saw action in the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

Stratford High School graduate Mazie Nagel and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point team won its first two matches at the regional at the University of St. Thomas before losing in the round of 16 to College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) 3-2 on Saturday.

Kenda Baierl, a Marshfield Columbus Catholic graduate and a junior on the UW-Eau Claire squad, played in the Blugolds’ opening round 3-1 loss to Saint Benedict on Thursday.

Stevens Point defeated Augsburg (Minn.) 3-2 on Thursday and St. Thomas 3-0 on Friday to reach the third round.

Nagel had two kills and 14 digs in the Pointers’ 25-23, 21-25, 24-26, 25-22, 16-14 come-from-behind win over Augsburg.

In the 25-21, 25-20, 25-16 sweep of St. Thomas, Nagel had 11 digs and one kills, and in the 26-24, 25-14, 18-25, 23-25, 15-10 loss to Saint Benedict, Nagel had two kills and seven digs for the Pointers (28-9).

Eau Claire won the first set 27-25 against Saint Benedict before dropping the next three, 25-13, 25-23, 25-22.

Baierl started and had a team-high 20 kills and one block for Eau Claire, who finishes the season with a 20-10 record.

Saint Benedict moves on to a match in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Nov. 21, against Calvin College (Mich.) at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The semifinals will be Nov. 22 and the championship match is Nov. 23.
