MARSHFIELD – The lineup for the Marshfield boys basketball team will be vastly different in the 2019-20 season compared to its Wisconsin Valley Conference championship squad of a year ago, but the play of the team on the floor will be very similar.
Marshfield lost three starters to graduation from last year’s squad that finished 16-7 overall and tied Merrill for the WVC title with a 10-2 mark. In addition to conference Co-Player of the Year and leading scorer Brant Bohman, second-team all-conference selection Preston Wagner and honorable mention choice Tommy Olson all graduated. And the Tigers will also be without three-year starter Isaac Meverden, who suffered an injury this past summer.
Three-year starter Anthony Posteluk is the lone returning starter for Marshfield, which will again will try to rely on a fast pace forced by its defensive pressure, and solid, if not spectacular, 3-point shooting.
Posteluk made eight of Marshfield’s 15 3-pointers in its season opener on Nov. 26, a 79-66 loss to Neenah. The eight made 3-pointers tied a school record.
Posteluk (8.5 points per game, 25 made 3-pointers in 2018-19) will look to add stability to a team that returns three key contributors from last year’s team and five letterwinners overall.
Seniors Addison Hill (4.0 ppg), Joey Goettl (2.2 ppg) and Sam Hinson return after seeing plenty of playing time in the Tigers’ rotation a year ago. Two other seniors, Kyle Tremelling and Bennett Koehn, will both look to play a more prominent role this season.
Juniors Sam Roherty, Wyatt LeMoine, Matt Donavan and Jack Nordbeck will also battle for playing time. Junior Will Nikolai is currently out with an injury.
“I love my guys, they’ve done everything I’ve asked,” Marshfield coach Scott Scheuer said following the loss to Neenah. “Our margin of error is pretty narrow right now, but we’re just going to battle and compete every game, and we’ll look up and see how we did.”
Marshfield hosts Holmen on Tuesday as part of a tough nonconference schedule that includes a trip to La Crosse Central, a team that has went to the WIAA State Tournament the past four seasons, on Friday, and games against Seymour, Milwaukee Pius XI, Rhinelander, Chippewa Falls and road contests at Eau Claire North and Eau Claire Memorial.
The Tigers open Wisconsin Valley Conference play with a girls-boys doubleheader at home on Dec. 13.
