MARSHFIELD – It took a while for the Marshfield boys basketball team to shake off the rust of a week off from competition, but once it did, the Tigers showed what type of team it could be this season.
Marshfield fell behind by seven early before scoring on 12-straight possessions to open up a double-digit lead and cruised to a 59-44 nonconference win over Holmen on Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.
Marshfield missed four of its first five shots and its first three free throw attempts, and turned the ball over three times in falling behind 10-3 five minutes into the game.
Suddenly, the Tigers got their offense rolling and never looked back.
Sam Roherty had five points and Anthony Posteluk hit a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 17-3 run to turn the game in Marshfield’s favor.
The Tigers converted on 12 possessions in a row to take a 32-18 lead, the final basket being a 3-pointer by Wyatt LeMoine with 4:45 to go in the half.
“I think we got the ball where we wanted to get the ball,” Marshfield coach Scott Scheuer said. “We talk about three sides – the ball starts on one, you want it to go to the other, then back. Every defense that we will play is strong initially. If you can move that defense, and we’ve got guys that can make shots. If we can get them in a position to get a good look, I feel real good about them making shots.”
Sam Hinson had a driving basket and connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to push the Tigers’ to a 39-22 lead at halftime.
Marshfield scored the first eight points of the second half as Posteluk drilled another 3-pointer, Addison Hill scored, and Bennett Koehn made a 3 for a 47-22 lead.
Marshfield took the air out of its offense after going up by as much as 26 on two different occasions, only scoring two free throws in the final 9 minutes, but it didn’t matter as Holmen was too far behind to catch up.
Posteluk finished with 18 points and six rebounds, Joey Goettl added 10 points, and Hill and Hinson each chipped in seven for Marshfield (1-1).
Cameron Weber had 10 points to lead Holmen (0-3), which shot just 15-for-43 from the field and missed 10 of 21 free throw attempts.
Marshfield will play at La Crosse Central on Friday.
“I liked what we did offensively,” Scheuer said. “We pressed and were up-tempo most of the game. I think we got better, but we’re going to have to get much better. We have Central next. It’s their first game, they’ll be ready.”
