MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield basketball teams made it a clean sweep of Wisconsin Rapids in the Wood County Classic on Friday night at the Boson Company Fieldhouse at Marshfield High School.

The Marshfield girls started things off with a gritty 48-44 win over the Raiders, and the Marshfield boys followed suit, pulling away in the second half to top Wisconsin Rapids 62-45.

In the girls game, the lead changed hands four times early before Marshfield began to assert itself.

Loryn Jakobi scored twice and Maddie Michaelis hit a pair of 3-pointers to help the Tigers built a 23-16 lead with 4 minutes to go in the first half.

Wisconsin Rapids closed the half with a 6-0 run, keyed by a 3-pointer by Ally Abbott and a basket at the buzzer by Alli Martin.

Marshfield built a five-point lead at 37-32 early in the second half with an 8-3 run that saw Danielle Minaas convert a three-point play and Paige Preston score three points.

Wisconsin Rapids again responded, scoring the next seven points. A 3-pointer by Hayley Wagner put the Raiders (1-4, 0-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) up 39-37 with 8 minutes to go.

From there, senior guard Kaydee Johnson took over for the Tigers.

Johnson hit a pair of 3-pointers, each giving the Tigers a one-point lead. The second once came at the 2:03 mark to put Marshfield up for good at 45-44. Rapids wouldn’t score the rest of the way and Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 5.1 seconds left to finish off the scoring and hand Marshfield (1-3, 1-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference) its first win of the season.

Michaelis had a team-high 11 points, and Johnson scored all 10 of her points in the second half, eight coming in the final 5:09. Johnson also had nine rebounds.

Meghan Clary had 13 points and Alli Martin had nine points and nine rebounds for Rapids.

The Marshfield girls are off for a week before traveling to Merrill on Dec. 20.

Marshfield started out hot in the boys game, pulling out to a 15-6 lead after a 3-pointer by Anthony Posteluk.

It took a little longer, but Rapids found its stroke as well, responding with a 13-0 run. Cayden Kautzer made two 3-pointers and Grant Flory converted a three-point play in the run to give the Raiders a 19-15 lead.

The teams went into halftime tied at 25-25, but it wouldn’t be close for long.

Marshfield scored the first eight points of the second half as Addison Hill and Sam Hinson each made two baskets driving to the hoop.

The new strategy worked well for the Tigers, who went to the basket constantly, which in turn, opened up the outside as well.

Marshfield made 15 of 23 shots in the second half, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range, and held Rapids at bay.

Three-pointers from Hill and Bennett Koehn put Marshfield up 45-33 with 11:42 remaining in the game.

Wisconsin Rapids closed to within five at 45-40, but would only score five points over the final 9:50.

Koehn and Joey Goettl each made 3-pointers, Posteluk made two baskets, and Goettl had a three-point play to help push the Tigers’ lead to 20 before a late 3-pointer from Wisconsin Rapids (1-4, 0-1 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

Goettl finished with 18 points, and Hill added 17 points and six rebounds for Marshfield (2-2, 1-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference).

Marshfield plays a nonconference game against Seymour at Kaukauna on Saturday at 4:40 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WDLB-AM 1450 and wdlbwosq.com.
