MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys hockey team climbed back to the .500 mark on the season with a dominating 6-1 nonconference win over Medford on the opening night of the Andrew Thiel Memorial Tournament on Friday night at the Marshfield Ice Arena.

Ben Lawyer scored in the first period, and Payton Smith added a pair of goals in the second to lift Marshfield (4-4-1) to a 3-0 lead.

Nick Urban added a goal late in the second period, and Sawyer Schindler and Evan Weister had goals in the first six minutes of the third to make it 6-0.

Medford scored a goal late to finish off the scoring.

“We played a good team game tonight and really controlled the first and third period,” Marshfield coach Eric Bowman said. “It is good to see production on the scoresheet from different players. We came out flat in the second period and (goalie) A.J. Trierweiler made some nice saves that kept the momentum of the game in our favor. Our team is starting to come together and we are seeing some positive signs before the holiday break.”

Trierweiler finished with 24 saves.

Marshfield will play Regis/Altoona/McDonell on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
