LA CROSSE – For the seventh year in a row, the Stratford wrestling team is the Division 3 champion at the Bi-State Classic.
Stratford had one individual champion in Gavin Drexler and had two others finish as runner-ups to earn the D-3 team title at the two-day tournament at the La Crosse Center on Friday and Saturday.
Stratford finished with 282.5 points, which was well ahead of second-place Chatfield (Minn.) in the D-3 standings, and second overall only behind Division 1 champion Stillwater (Minn.).
Drexler won the 126-pound title for Stratford, moving to 23-0 on the season, with a 5-3 decision over Ryan Henningson of Winona/Winona Cotter (Minn.).
Marshfield finished third in the Division 1 standings with two third-place finishes and seven overall ending up in the top 12 in their respective weight classes.
Spencer/Columbus Catholic had a second- and fourth-place finisher to end up 12th out of 25 teams in Division 2, and Auburndale had Dylan Baird take 11th place at 138 pounds to finish 13th in Division 3.
Max Schwabe (22-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Stratford, losing in the 138-pound championship match to unbeaten Jessie Tijerina (21-0) of Portage, 5-2.
Trevor Dennee (22-1) also lost for the first time this season in the 182-pound final for Stratford, falling 3-1 in overtime to Reece Worachek (25-1) of Luxemburg-Casco.
Spencer/Columbus Catholic’s Ashton Ackman and Treyton Ackman were two more area wrestlers to fall from the ranks of the unbeatens at the tournament, but both earned solid finishes in the 69-team meet.
Ashton Ackman (18-1) lost 6-4 in sudden victory overtime to Sam Smith of Holmen in the 113-pound final, while Treyton Ackman (21-2) lost in both the semifinals and the third-place match at 120 to take fourth for the Rockets.
Marshfield had third-place finishes from Gabe Pugh at 138 and Ryan Dolezal at 145, Shane Westerhausen took fifth at 113, Keagen Cliver was sixth at 120, and Brett Franklin finished seventh at 132.
Hunter Ford added a fourth-place finish at 170, Devin Dennee (160) and Raife Smart (195) each took seventh, and Konner Stuttgen finished eighth at 145 for Stratford.
