Auburndale girls basketball uses free throw advantage to top Stratford

AUBURNDALE – Auburndale made only nine field goals but held a huge advantage at the free throw line and was able to hold off Stratford to win 44-40 in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball game Thursday night at Auburndale High School.

The Apaches made only three conventional baskets and had six 3-pointers, while going 20-for-33 at the free throw line to eke out the win.

Stratford committed 24 fouls to Auburndale’s 15, and the Apaches finished with a 20-8 advantage on free throws.

Auburndale led 23-21 at halftime and made 13 of 19 free throws in the second half to hold on.

Taylor Stanton had two 3-pointers and finished with 12 points to lead Auburndale, which improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the Marawood South.

Breanna Ackley had 13 points and Emily Hughes scored 10 for Stratford (3-7, 2-4 Marawood South).

Both teams return to action with Marawood South games on Tuesday. Stratford will be at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Auburndale hosts first-place Wausau Newman Catholic.
