WAUSAU – Wausau West scored six unanswered goals from late in the first period to early in the third and went on to defeat Marshfield 8-2 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey game Thursday night at the Marathon Park Ice Arena.

West led 2-0 before Sawyer Schindler scored with 2:13 left in the first period to bring the Tigers to within a goal.

The Warriors responded with six-straight goals to open up a 8-1 lead and put the game away.

Carson Marquardt and Cole Hannes each had a pair of goals for West, which improves to 11-2 overall and remains unbeaten at 4-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

Despite the loss, Marshfield coach Eric Bowman was pleased with the Tigers’ play.

“We played with a lot of grit and great effort tonight,” Bowman said. “When we broke down defensively, they capitalized on their opportunities. We had a few chances to keep the game close, but did not finish our chances. West is a talented team and we are happy with the effort that we saw tonight. The positive signs are showing up, and our team is growing. We have a week until our next game, and will work to correct some of the small mistakes that have been leading to goals against.”

Max Heller scored Marshfield’s final goal midway through the third period.

Marshfield falls to 7-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the WVC. The Tigers will have a week off before playing at Stevens Point on Thursday, Jan. 16.
