MERRILL – The Marshfield boys basketball team rebounded from a loss at Wisconsin Rapids to dominate Merrill and win 58-45 on Thursday night at Merrill High School.
The two teams entered the game, along with D.C. Everest, in a three-way tie for first place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. With the win, and the season sweep of the Bluejays, Marshfield improves to 6-2 in conference play and temporarily moves into sole possession of first in the standings. D.C. Everest hosts Wausau West and Stevens Point plays at home against Wisconsin Rapids on Friday.
Marshfield jumped out to a 29-18 lead by halftime and maintained its double-digit lead in the second half.
Joey Goettl had 19 points and Sam Hinson scored a career-high 17 points for Marshfield, which improves to 9-6 overall. Kyle Tremelling chipped in 10 in the victory.
Marshfield struggled from 3-point range, making just 4 of 15 attempts, but were 15-for-27 on two-point attempts, and also made 16 of 28 free throws. Hinson was 6-for-7 at the line.
Marshfield returns to action Tuesday with a nonconference game at Eau Claire North.
