MERRILL – If the Marshfield volleyball team is to climb into the top half of the Wisconsin Valley Conference standings, it is going to have to have a great final 10 days to the season.

The Tigers got their final stretch of the regular season off on a good note with a 3-0 sweep of Merrill on Tuesday.

Marshfield won the match 25-22, 25-23, 25-19.

The win moves Marshfield into a tie for fourth in the Wisconsin Valley at 4-3, one-half game behind Wausau West and Stevens Point, which are 4-2.

The Tigers’ offense was on a roll against Merrill with three players finishing with double-digit kills.

Tiffany Stargardt had 15 kills, Sarah Cherney added 11 and Kim Johnson had 10 for the Tigers. Setter Sarah Wolff had 40 assists.

“This was a good win for us as it put us above the .500 mark in the conference,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “Our offense really came through for us tonight with 3 hitters getting double digits in kills.

“Hopefully we can continue to play with the confidence we did tonight; we will need to with the schedule we have in the next week.”

The WVC schedule concludes for the Tigers with matches at Wausau West on Thursday, at the final WVC tournament on Saturday at West, and at home against first-place Wausau East (7-1) and winless Wisconsin Rapids (0-7) next week.

Darian Molter had 17 digs and Stargardt had 13 to lead the Tigers’ defense.
