MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys basketball came into its Wisconsin Valley Conference showdown with D.C. Everest less than 100 percent.
A number of Marshfield players battled illness in the past week and D.C. Everest wasn’t about to show any mercy. The Evergreens’ 1-2-2 full-court trapping defense caused problems early and Marshfield couldn’t recover from a big run in the opening five minutes, falling to Everest 74-50 on Friday night at Marshfield High School.
The win pushes D.C. Everest into sole possession of first place in the Wisconsin Valley Conference at 7-2, with Marshfield falling back to 6-3 with three games remaining in conference play.
D.C. Everest used a 15-0 run over just a span of 2:19 in the first half to open up a 17-5 lead.
After Marshfield ended the run on a basket by Addison Hill, Everest scored the next 10 points, eight from Bryan Halambeck, to take a 27-7 lead and the Evergreens (12-3 overall) never looked back.
“They didn’t do anything different to us tonight than they did when we played them at their place when we really didn’t have a problem with it,” Marshfield coach Scott Scheuer said. “I was a little concerned with our overall condition because we haven’t went up-and-down (the court in practice) in about a week. This morning was the first time we’ve had all 10 of our guys in a week.
“Everest was really good tonight. Not only did their 1-2-2 (zone) give us some problems, but they made shots, and a lot of them.”
Joey Goettl hit a pair of 3-pointers to help Marsfield close to within 40-24 at halftime.
Marshfield had a chance to get back in the game early in the second half. A 3-pointer from Sam Hinson and a basket by Hill made it 40-29 before Keaton Edwards countered with a 3-pointer for Everest.
D.C. Everest three shots in a row and turned the ball over twice, but the Tigers couldn’t take advantage, missing six shots in a row.
Halambeck scored to start an 18-5 run that opened up the Evergreens’ lead to 61-34 with 7:15 to go, effectively ending any comeback attempt from Marshfield (10-7 overall).
“Everest forced us to play the way we did tonight,” Scheuer said. “You just have to give them credit.”
Halambeck finished with a game-high 23 points and Alec Stuedemann added 20 for D.C. Everest.
Anthony Posteluk scored 15 points and Goettl had 12 for the Tigers.
Marshfield returns to action Thursday at Wausau East.
