WAUSAU – The Marshfield boys basketball team used its precise free throw shooting to hold off a comeback attempt from Wausau West and down the Warriors 61-56 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday night at West High School.

In a must-win situation for Marshfield and its hopes for a second-straight WVC championship, the Tigers made 26 of 29 free throws to ice the game and improve to 12-7 overall and 8-3 in the conference.

The win keeps Marshfield in the title chase with one conference game remaining – Feb. 27 at Stevens Point. D.C. Everest defeated Wisconsin Rapids and Tuesday and finishes its Valley schedule Friday at Merrill. The Tigers need a win and a loss by Everest to clinch a tie for the conference championship.

Marshfield led 27-15 at halftime before the Warriors mounted a comeback with 41 second-half points. The Tigers, however, were able to hold on with their stellar free throw shooting.

Anthony Posteluk scored 27 points for the Tigers, making three of Marshfield’s five 3-pointers and he was 8-for-9 at the free throw line. Joey Goettl made all seven of his free throw attempts and finished with 14 points for Marshfield.

Marshfield will play nonconference games at Eau Claire Memorial on Saturday and at home against Rhinelander on Monday before its WVC finale at Stevens Point.

Amillion Buggs led West (3-16, 0-10 WVC) with 19 points.
