GREENWOOD – The Spencer volleyball team will have to settle for third place in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division after suffering a 3-1 loss to Greenwood in a showdown for second place in the conference standings.

Courtney Schulz had 24 kills and Dani Johnson had 11 digs and two service aces for the Rockets in a 26-24, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19 loss to Greenwood.

Greenwood finishes the Cloverbelt East season with an 8-1 record, while Spencer drops to 7-2 after having its seven-match win streak snapped. Owen-Withee won the conference title with a perfect 9-0 record.

“We took one on the chin,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “Greenwood passed and hustled a little better all night. Now we need to come together as a team before the playoffs start.

“When we passed and moved, we kept them off balance. We just didn’t do those things enough.”

Kylie Esser had 21 assists and Kyleigh Hebert added 15 for Spencer.

The Rockets will host Chippewa Falls McDonell in a third-place Cloverbelt crossover match on Tuesday before opening WIAA regional action on Oct. 19. Pairings for the WIAA playoffs will be announced next week.
