MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Chaparrals amateur baseball team is Dairyland League champions.
The Chaparrals scored a run in the top of the eighth inning and held on to defeat the Everest Merchants 4-3 in the league championship game Sunday afternoon at Jack Hackman Field.
With the game tied 3-3, Caleb Krommenakker had a bunt single to score Nate McDonald with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth.
Only one Everest player reached base in the final two innings as Krommenakker finished off a complete game. He struck out six, walked two and scattered eight hits. He also went 3-for-5 with two RBIs at the plate.
McDonald had two hits and Luke Wirtz had an RBI as he was hit by a pitch with a bases loaded in the fourth inning.
The Chaparrals (16-4) advance to the Wisconsin Baseball Association state tournament this weekend in Hayward and Spooner. Marshfield earned a first-round bye with the win Sunday and will play Saturday, Aug. 15. Game times and matchups will be announced on Monday night.
