WAUSAU – The Marshfield volleyball team completed a tough week of competition, all on the road, at the second and final Wisconsin Valley Conference tournament of the season by going 1-1 Saturday at Wausau West.
The Tigers lost to Merrill 25-19, 25-22, 25-23, and beat Stevens Point in a grueling five-game match 28-30, 17-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-11 to improve to 6-4 in WVC play this season.
Tiffany Stargardt led the Tigers with 23 kills, Sarah Cherney had 22 kills and Mikala Sebastian chipped in with 21. Setter Sarah Wolff had a team-high 55 assists.
“We, of course, would have liked to be 2-0 today, but when I look at the competition we have had on the road this week against some extremely tough teams, I’m very pleased with our 3-1 record for the week,” Marshfield coach Dawn Sadowska said. “The girls never quit in any match, and we are playing the way we need to be playing as we head into tournament play.”
Darian Molter led the Marshfield defense with 46 digs. Cherney added 36 and Stargardt had 32.
Marshfield hosts first-place Wausau East on Tuesday and Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday to wrap up its regular season. The Tigers will open WIAA Division 1 regional action on Oct. 19. Seedings for the state playoffs will be announced later this week.
