MARSHFIELD – The Unified School District of Marshfield and the Marshfield High School athletic department announced Thursday afternoon that it is suspending operations of its football program effective immediately and continuing through at least Oct. 4, due to COVID-19 concerns.
The Marshfield football team was to begin its 2020 season with a home game against Hortonville on Friday, and host Wisconsin Rapids next Friday, Oct. 2. Both games have been rescheduled to Oct. 30 and Nov. 6, respectively.
“In an abundance of caution and in response to an increase in disruptions caused by COVID-19, the School District of Marshfield has made the difficult decision to suspend football program operations at Marshfield High School effective immediately and continuing through at least Oct. 4,” Marshfield High School athletic director Nathan DeLany said in a press release Thursday.
“This suspension of high school football activities includes postponing and rescheduling the first two weeks of football competition at all levels. The school district remains focused on the health and safety of our students, staff, and the greater Marshfield community, as well as that of our visiting opponents,” the statement concluded.
If all goes well, Marshfield will now open its 2020 season on Friday, Oct. 9, at Wausau East.
