NEKOOSA – It was all about winning time for the Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team in its 2020 season opener at Nekoosa on Friday night.

Trailing 8-7 at halftime and into the start of the fourth quarter, the Rockets turned to senior running back Eden Jacobson and their offensive line to change the course of the game, scoring three touchdowns in the final period, and pulled away for a 27-8 victory.

Jacobson finished with 179 yards rushing on 27 carries and scored three touchdowns, and Dominic Post added a 10-yard TD run late for the Rockets, who were playing their first game in the Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division.

“Nekoosa was big and tough up front, but I give our guys credit for sticking with it and having a great fourth quarter,” SC coach Jason Gorst said. “Eden ran the ball very well. I thought our guard play between Austin Grubofski, David Ellefson, and Carson Schmidt was very solid. Connor Luedtke, Sawyer Kilty, and Connor Clark had good nights up front as well.”

Spencer/Columbus held Nekoosa to just 71 yards on 45 plays, giving up just five yards passing and 66 rushing yards on 38 carries. The Rockets also recovered two Nekoosa fumbles as the defensive effort through the first three quarters was able to keep them in the game until the offense found its groove in the fourth quarter.

Jacobson and Cole Timmler each had five tackles to lead the SC defense.

Spencer/Columbus will play its home opener at Spencer High School on Oct. 2 against Manawa. Nekoosa will play at Amherst next week.
