MARSHFIELD – Sam Roherty had a hat trick and Trevor Cassidy saved nine of 10 shots to lift the Marshfield boys soccer team to a 3-1 win over Wausau East on Thursday night at Heiting Community Stadium at Marshfield High School.
Alek Zavadowski scored on a penalty kick with three minutes to go before halftime, but Marshfield quickly rallied as Roherty scored his first goal with 1:09 to go in the half.
Roherty broke the tie with a goal in the 62nd minute and added an insurance score with 42 seconds remaining.
Marshfield is now 2-2 overall and in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. East falls to 1-3 overall and in the WVC.
The Tigers play at Wausau West on Saturday at 11 a.m.
“He is a special player and now has racked up eight goals in the last three games,” Marshfield assistant coach Steve Lindner said of Roherty. “But we need others to step up and hit some goals. Next week we only have two games so it will allow some adjustments and enhancements to take place. We look forward to that as we go into the second half of the season already.”
On Tuesday, Marshfield lost at Wisconsin Rapids 3-2.
Joey Termat, Brandon Kaud and Zilfi Aliu scored in the first 26 minutes of action to give Rapids a 3-0 lead.
Roherty added a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the half, but that was all either team could muster and the Tigers fell short.
Cassidy had 10 saves for Marshfield.
