GREENWOOD – Alex Willfahrt hauled in a miraculous catch on the final play of the game to give the Auburndale football team its second win of the young season, a 32-26 victory over Greenwood on Saturday afternoon at Greenwood High School in 8-man action.

After Greenwood quarterback Cooper Bredlau scored on a 1-yard run with 34 seconds left to tie the game, the Auburndale defense stuffed a two-point conversion run to keep the score at 26-26.

Auburndale took over and quarterback Hunter Wright completed a long pass to Schuyler Gilhausen to get the Eagles to the 28-yard line with time enough left for one play.

Wright tossed a pass to the left corner of the end zone where Willfahrt leaped and tipped the ball, fell to the ground, tipped it again, and finally secured it to give the Eagles the win.

Wright threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kaden Hoffman and added a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the first half, but a late touchdown run by Sully Whitford with 1:09 to go before halftime gave Greenwood a 14-12 lead at halftime.

Wright tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Tim Schmidt and Wright had a two-point conversion run to put the Eagles up 20-14 in the third quarter.

Terrance Roberson scored from 30 yards away with 7:25 to go to push Auburndale’s lead to 26-14.

Greenwood scored with 4:57 left on Whitford’s third touchdown run, then recovered an onside kick, drove down and scored on the Bredlau TD with 34 seconds to go to set up Auburndale’s final drive.

Roberson finished with 120 yards rushing and Wright had 156 yards passing to lead the Auburndale offense. Willfahrt, in addition to his two catches and the game-winning touchdown, had a one-handed interception.

Xander Hinker had 111 yards rushing and Whitford added 87 more as Greenwood piled up 261 yards on the ground.
