SPENCER – The Spencer volleyball team had a glimpse into how tough the postseason will be as it tries to make a run toward the WIAA state tournament.

The Rockets dropped a tough five-game match to Chippewa Falls McDonell on Tuesday in the third-place match of the Cloverbelt Conference crossovers.

McDonell won 25-22, 18-25, 25-17, 22-25, 19-17 in the regular-season finale for both teams.

“That was as good of a warm-up you can have going into the playoffs,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “It was one of those matches you hated to see a loser in. Good things will happen if we play like we did tonight for the next couple weeks.”

Courtney Schulz once again led the offense for Spencer, finishing with 31 kills. Kyleigh Hebert had 19 assists and Kylie Esser had 17 assists. Dani Johnson had 24 digs to lead the defense.

Spencer hosts Cadott in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal on Tuesday.
