THREE LAKES – The Marshfield Columbus Catholic volleyball team put up a valiant fight but came up short in a WIAA Division 4 sectional semifinal on Thursday night, losing to Three Lakes 3-2.
The Dons lost the first two sets 28-26 and 25-22 before rallying to win the next two – 26-24 and 25-19 – to force a fifth-and-deciding set. Three Lakes was able to control the fifth set and won 15-9 to advance to a sectional final at Prentice on Saturday.
The Dons were down much of the first set and trailed 24-21 before earning a sideout. Kelsey Moore served four points in a row to give Columbus a 25-24 lead. Three Lakes fought back and eventually won it 28-26.
In the second set it was Three Lakes’ turn to come from behind. Columbus led 17-13 before the Bluejays ripped off seven-straight points.
Emmalee Jicinsky ended the run for the Dons, but Three Lakes was able to hold on for a 25-22 win.
Three Lakes rallied again in the third set, coming back from a 17-14 deficit to even the match at 23-23. This time, however, the Dons were able to pull out a 26-24 victory.
Columbus led much of the fourth set and a push kill by Dorci Walker finished off a 25-19 win and force a fifth set.
All of the Dons’ momentum vanished early in the final set as Three Lakes pulled away for the 15-9 win to finish off the victory.
Walker had 29 kills, 22 digs and three service aces, and Jicinsky had 18 kills and 21 digs for the Dons.
Meghan Kibbel had a team-high 40 assists, 14 digs and four aces, Kelsey Moore had 13 digs, and Jenna Kibbel chipped in six kills and 10 digs for Columbus Catholic.
