HARTLAND – The Marshfield girls cross country team, making its first state meet appearance since 2008, finished ninth on Saturday at the WIAA Division 1 State Cross Country Meet at Hartland Arrowhead High School.
Marshfield finished with 219 points as junior Eliana Kanitz finished 41st in 19:44.5 and sophomore Michaela Dick followed in 42nd in 19:46.3 to lead the way in the girls portion of the state meet.
Freshman Calleigh Kanitz was 66th (20:23.8), senior Dehlia Kilty took 94th (21:25.5) and junior Kairi Kim was 97th (21:30.9) to round out the top five scoring runners for the Tigers. Senior Jerica Mueller was 110th (22:36.7) and junior Megan Jaeger finished 112th (22:43.7) as well for Marshfield.
Kaukauna won the team championship with 79 points, with Whitefish Bay second with 86 and Onalaska third with 99.
Onalaska’s Kora Malecek won the girls race in 17:52.8, 7½ seconds ahead of Kimberly’s Brooke Edwardson.
Merrill’s Elizabeth Schmidt finished 11th in 18:50.7 and D.C. Everest’s Sara Mlodik took 19th in 19:06.4 as they also represented the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
Oconomowoc won the boys team title with 109 points, followed by Milwaukee Marquette University with 129 and Whitefish Bay with 130.
Area runners competing were Medford’s Joe Sullivan, who finished 33rd in 16:39.6 and D.C. Everest’s Lucas Allen, who was 68th in 17:18.8.
