Big third period pushes Northland Pines past Marshfield boys hockey

MARSHFIELD – Northland Pines scored five goals in the opening 8 minutes of the third period to pull away for a 7-3 win over Marshfield in a nonconference boys hockey game Saturday at the Marshfield Ice Arena.

Payton Smith and Tyler Reissmann had goals, on assists from Sawyer Schindler and Tristian Reissmann, to help push Marshfield to a 2-2 tie heading into the third period.

The Eagles then turned up their offense, scoring five times in a span of 6:20 to take control.

Jake Wielhouwer, Riley McGee and Luke Wessel scored, and Josh Cherney had a pair of goals for Northland Pines (1-1).

Smith scored on an assist from Ian Haugen with 1:47 remaining for Marshfield’s last goal.

Cole Halvorsen had 19 saves for the Tigers, who were playing their season opener. Mitch McCanles saved 24 shots for Northland Pines.

Marshfield hosts Wisconsin Rapids at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Marshfield Ice Arena. The game will be live-streamed at zaleskisports.com/live-sports.
