MARSHFIELD – For the second game in a row, the Marshfield boys basketball team found itself in a dog fight.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, they came up short again.
D.C. Everest scored twice in the opening minute of overtime and the Evergreens were able to hold on for a 55-52 win in a Wisconsin Valley Conference game Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.
D.C. Everest led for all but 1:45 in the game, with Marshfield pulling ahead three times only to see the Evergreens quickly regain the lead.
Both teams applied steady defensive pressure throughout the game. Marshfield had nine turnovers and D.C. Everest committed 13 in the first half as the Evergreens took a 24-18 lead into halftime.
D.C. Everest (2-1, 2-0 Wisconsin Valley Conference) pulled ahead by 10 ealry in the second half before Marshfield began to fight back.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Chase Hinson and a basket by Marcus Neve pulled the Tigers to within two at 28-26.
After Everest pushed its lead back to six, Matt Trulen, Wyatt LeMoine and Matt Donovan made baskets in a 10-2 run that gave Marshfield a 36-34 lead with 4:24 to go.
A three-point play by Colton Hall just 18 seconds later put D.C. Everest back on top, and the lead changed hands three more times in the next minute.
Following a layup by Beau Svoke, who led Everest with 17 points, that put the Evergreens up 46-43 with 1:08 left, Austin Sommer scored and Sam Roherty made a pair of free throws to put Marshfield back on top at 47-46 with 14.3 seconds to go.
Colton Hall was fouled with 2 seconds to go and made one of two free throws to tie the game at 47-47. Marshfield’s last-second shot fell short and the game went to overtime.
In the extra period, Marcus Hall and Svoke scored in the opening minute for the Evergreens. After a Roherty drilled a 3-pointer for Marshfield, Landon Mezei countered with a long ball and D.C. Everest was able to hold on, keeping the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way.
Hinson finished with 12 points on the strength of three 3-pointers and added a team-high six rebounds, and Roherty added 11 points for Marshfield (0-2 overall and Wisconsin Valley Conference).
