AUBURNDALE – The Auburndale football team now has a chance to make the WIAA playoffs for the first time since 2005. Next week, it can guarantee it.
The Apaches scored a whopping 52 first-half points on their way to a dominating 66-7 win over Phillips on Friday at Auburndale High School, ensuring themselves at least at .500 record in the Marawood Conference, and with it, postseason consideration from the WIAA.
Auburndale (5-3, 4-3 Marawood Conference) plays at Pittsville (3-5, 3-4) on Thursday with a chance to sew up a playoff spot. Teams that finish .500 in conference play are considered, but not guaranteed a playoff berth.
Kyle Willfahrt ran for 177 yards on just 15 carries and had four first-half touchdowns to lead the Auburndale attack. The Apaches ran for 330 yards, added 77 more in the air, and help Phillips (0-8, 0-7 Marawood) to just 127 total yards.
Austin Hawkins added a 13-yard touchdown reception from C.J. Castellano, who also had a 55-yard punt return for a score. Five Auburndale players had at least 30 yards rushing.
