PARK FALLS – The Stratford football team responded from a loss at Edgar last week with a 53-20 rout of Chequamegon on Friday night, improving to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the Marawood Conference.
The win keeps Stratford’s hopes of sharing a Marawood title alive. If the Tigers beat Rib Lake/Prentice in their final game on Thursday and undefeated Edgar is upset by Marathon, Stratford would share the title.
Stratford hosts Rib Lake/Prentice at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tiger Stadium.
Stratford started out strong, scoring three first-quarter touchdowns, and adding three more in the second to take a commanding 39-7 lead.
Austin Shelley, Josh Reif and Jake Kauth scored in the first quarter and Mark Marquardt scored all three TDs in the second quarter – two rushing and one on a fumble return – to help Stratford build a comfortable lead.
Stratford rushed for 368 yards, which was spread out between 10 different ball carriers. Shelley led the way with 99 yards, Marquardt added 85 and Jamie Aschebrock chipped in with 62.
Defensively, Stratford recovered four fumbles and intercepted a pass.
