AUBURNDALE – Wisconsin Rapids Assumption made 15 of 24 free throw attempts in the second half to outlast Auburndale 51-44 in a Marawood Conference South Division girls basketball matchup Thursday night at Auburndale High School.
Assumption and Auburndale came into the game in a virtual four-way tie for first place atop the Marawood South standings, along with Stratford and Edgar.
Assumption, with the victory, moves into a two-way tie with Stratford – winners at Edgar on Thursday – for the conference lead. Stratford is now 7-3 and Assumption is 6-2, while Auburndale and Edgar fall to 5-3 in conference play.
Jessie Grundhoffer scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half, making 8 of 10 from the free throw line overall and 6 of 8 in the second half, and Ainara Martin added 16 points for the Royals (8-7 overall).
Kaitlyn Kundinger had 14 points and Annamarie Aue added 12 for Auburndale (9-4 overall).
Assumption will play at a nonconference game at Stevens Point Pacelli on Saturday, before hosting Marathon on Monday and Edgar on Tuesday in a pair of Marawood South contests.
Auburndale returns to action Tuesday at home against Marathon.
