Columbus Catholic boys basketball wins rematch with Neillsville

NEILLSVILLE – Three days after an overtime loss to Neillsville, the Marshfield Columbus Catholic boys basketball team rebounded with a 71-67 victory over the Warriors on Monday night at Neillsville High School.

Neillsville defeated Columbus 63-62 in overtime on Friday, handing the Dons their first conference loss.

The rematch on Monday was tight as well. The Dons led by nine at halftime before Neillsville tightened things up at the end.

Columbus Catholic was able to hold on, making 12 of 13 free throws in the second half.

“Everybody that played contributed,” Columbus Catholic coach Joe Konieczny said. “We’ve got some kids that can shoot, we’ve got some kids that can defend, and they all played a role tonight. Each guy did something to help us get that win.”

Jadon Nienast scored 20 points and Eden Jacobson added 16 for the Dons, who are now 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the Cloverbelt East. Columbus Catholic remains one-half game behind Greenwood for first place in the conference. Columbus is at Greenwood on Thursday.

Drew Brown scored 17 and Brayden Trunkel had 14 for Neillsville (6-5, 5-2 Cloverbelt East). Neillsville hosts Loyal on Thursday.
