MARSHFIELD – Marshfield couldn’t match the overall depth and talent of No. 1-ranked Wisconsin Rapids, dropping a Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet to the Raiders 53-10 on Thursday night at the Marshfield High School Fieldhouse.
Brad Dolezal (152 pounds), Trenton Larson (160) and Jordan Koranda (215) were the only winners for Marshfield, which falls to 3-2 in the WVC. Rapids improves to 4-0.
Koranda won the closest match of the night, holding off Vaughn Grube 7-6 to improve to 29-1 this season.
Koranda led 6-4 before Grube managed a takedown to tie the match. However, Grube allowed Koranda to escape in hopes of landing a takedown to win the match. Koranda had to hold off the Rapids senior for nearly 1 minute to get the win, and he did.
“I thought after he gave me the escape that we were tied, but once I realized that I was ahead, I was like, ‘Hey, I just have to hold on, don’t do anything stupid,” Kordanda said. “I was getting a little nervous. I kept watching that clock tick, and it was nice.
“I’ve wrestled (Grube) all the way up through youth (wrestling) and that’s the first time I’ve beaten him, so that feels good.”
Dolezal, ranked No. 1 at 152 pounds by Wisconsin Wrestling Online, won a major decision 8-0 over Ryan Cone following two pins by Rapids to open the match.
Dolezal controlled the match throughout, but got Cone on his back only once and couldn’t force a pin.
Larson followed with a 5-3 win in overtime over Garret Schilling at 160. After a scoreless third period, Larson got a takedown of Schilling with 23 seconds left in the 1-minute extra period.
“I thought all our guys battled pretty well,” Marshfield coach Don Lang said. “Just hand it to them, they are a tough team. Dolezal had a tough match and got a major decision against a tough kid, and Larson and Koranda really gutted out close matches.”
Rapids put the match away by winning nine of the final 10 matches – three by pin and two by technical fall.
Despite the blowout loss, Lang doesn’t want the Tigers to take too much away from it. The postseason begins in two weeks, and he said he likes where his team is at as the regular season nears its end.
“I brought them in the circle (after the match) and told them, ‘We have a good team here, we do. We can’t let this get us down.”
Marshfield is at the Sparta Tournament on Saturday and wraps up its regular season next Thursday at home against Stevens Point.
