MARSHFIELD – Wausau West handed the Marshfield boys basketball team its sixth-straight loss, 44-41 on Tuesday night at Marshfield High School.
Matt Donovan made a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to bring Marshfield to within one at 42-41.
Marshfield fouled with 8 seconds to go and West’s Keegen Jirschele made a pair of free throws to extend its lead to three. A desperation 3-pointer in the final seconds for Marshfield was wide.
“Certainly, Wausau West is a good defensive team, so you have to give them credit to a certain extent, but we were really bad offensively and clearly that was the difference tonight because we guarded them well enough to win,” Marshfield coach Chris Fischer said.
Sam Roherty had 12 points, and Gavin Fravert added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers, who are now 2-11 overall and 2-8 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
Helke topped West with 14 points, and Buggs had 13 points and nine rebounds in the win. West improves to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the Valley.
Both teams return to action Friday. Marshfield will play a nonconference game at home against Eau Claire North, while Wausau West will be at home against Stevens Point.
