ST. CROIX FALLS – The Stratford wrestling team’s run of five-straight trip to the state team tournament came to an end, but the Tigers will send five athletes to the individual state meet after competition at the WIAA Division 3 individual wrestling sectional at St. Croix Falls High School.
Cadott won the team title with 170 points and will advance to the WIAA Division 3 State Team Wrestling Tournament at Wausau West High School on Feb. 20. Stratford finished third in the team standings with 152 points.
Stratford had three individual sectional champions and two runner-ups. The five qualify for the WIAA Division 3 State Individual Wrestling Tournament at Wausau West on Feb. 13.
Stratford junior Gavin Drexler, who went 50-0 in winning the Division 3 126-pound state title last year, will be back to go for a second after beating Tyler Sunday of Clear Lake with a 14-1 major decision in the 138-pound sectional final. Drexler is now 18-0, running his match winning streak to 68 in a row.
Also earning sectional titles for the Tigers were Elijah Lucio and Logan Rueth.
Lucio (15-2) won the 145-pound championship with a 3-2 victory over Tristan Drier of Cadott, and Rueth (15-2) took the 170-pound title with a pin in 5:21 over Brayden Wolf of Spring Valley/Elmwood.
The two other Stratford state qualifiers needed second-place wrestlebacks to earn their spots.
Jacob Heiden (18-2) won his third-place match and then earned a 12-0 win in a second-place wrestleback over Tommy Quinn of Cameron, 12-0.
After suffering his first loss of the season in the semifinals to undefeated Trett Joles of Boyceville, Raife Smart won his third-place match and second-place wrestleback with pins to earn a state tournament spot.
Marathon’s Jared Sweno will also move on to the Division 3 state meet after placing second at 132 pounds. Sweno (14-3) lost by technical fall to Mason Will (15-0) of St. Croix Falls, 19-2, in the championship match.
